Every now and then, an event comes along that reminds us why we love this industry.
Not because of a new product launch or the promise of better specifications, but because it gives us the opportunity to learn directly from the people whose passion and expertise shape the products we use every day.
On Saturday, The Listening Room had the privilege of welcoming Viktor de Leeuw, Director of Operations at Siltech, to Cape Town for an exclusive presentation on the company's history, philosophy, and engineering. As the official South African distributor for Siltech, we were honoured to host Viktor on his first visit to South Africa, giving our clients a rare opportunity to hear firsthand from one of the minds behind one of the world's most respected cable manufacturers.
With an audience of passionate music lovers, long-standing clients, and Hi-Fi Club members, the morning quickly became much more than a product presentation. It became an insightful discussion about science, engineering, and the relentless pursuit of reproducing music as faithfully as possible.
More Than a Cable Company
Founded in 1983, Siltech—short for Silver Technology—has spent over four decades refining one goal: preserving the purity of an audio signal from source to loudspeaker.
While many people see a cable as a simple connection between two components, Viktor demonstrated that every Siltech cable represents years of research into materials science, metallurgy, electromagnetic behaviour, and mechanical engineering.
At the heart of the company's philosophy lies a simple but uncompromising objective:
Absolute purity of signal transfer in pursuit of the most faithful musical experience possible.
That philosophy has guided Siltech since its inception and continues to drive its team of approximately forty specialists, including a dedicated research and development department made up of engineers and PhD-level physicists.
Why Silver? Why Gold?
One of the most fascinating topics of the morning was Siltech's choice of materials.
Silver has long been recognised as the most electrically conductive metal available, making it exceptionally effective at transmitting delicate musical information with remarkable speed, transparency, and detail.
However, Viktor explained that conductivity alone isn't enough.
Siltech's breakthrough came through combining silver with gold, not to change the tonal balance of a system through equalisation, but to improve the crystal structure of the conductor itself. By enhancing the stability of the metal, Siltech has developed conductors capable of delivering exceptional resolution while maintaining the natural warmth and musicality that many listeners value.
The result is a cable designed not to add character to a system, but to remove barriers between the recording and the listener.
Engineering Before Manufacturing
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the morning was the sheer amount of engineering involved before a cable ever reaches production.

Viktor's answer was refreshingly straightforward.
His first recommendation was the interconnect between your source component and preamplifier, followed closely by investing in quality power cables—a practical insight that many attendees left eager to explore within their own systems.

It was the opportunity to hear directly from someone who has spent nearly a decade helping guide one of the industry's most respected manufacturers.
